Analysis and forecasting of the business cycle are core competences of WIFO and have been pillars of scientific activity since the institute was founded in 1927.
Within its focus topic "Business cycle and economic growth", WIFO issues quarterly short-term economic forecasts and regular business cycle reports as well as an annual medium-term forecast for Austria and the global economy as central publication formats.
Forecasts are based on both flash and regular estimates of Quarterly National Accounts, both compiled by WIFO, and on the results of the "WIFO-Konjunkturtest" (business cycle survey in cooperation with the European Commission). Furthermore, a business cycle indicator for Austria (WIFO leading indicator) is compiled from the survey results and other business cycle indicators.
The short- and medium-term forecasting activities are based on econometric models, which are also used to evaluate economic policy measures.
