WIFO-Konjunkturtest

The WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) is a monthly survey of Austrian companies on their economic situation and its development in the coming months. The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest help to reliably assess the economic development in Austria at an early stage. The WIFO-Konjunkturtest has been conducted since 1954 and has been part of the "Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys" since 1996.

Die Ergebnisse des WIFO-Konjunkturtests vom Oktober zeigen eine Seitwärtsbewegung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Konjunktureinschätzungen. Der WIFO-Konjunkturklimaindex notierte mit –7,9 Punkten (saisonbereinigt) allerdings um 0,5 Punkte über dem Wert des Vormonats (8,4 Punkte). Das pessimistische Konjunkturbild wird insbesondere durch die fortgesetzt schwache Industriekonjunktur bestimmt. Die Lagebeurteilungen verschlechterten sich in der Sachgütererzeugung weiter, während sie gesamtwirtschaftlich nahezu unverändert blieben. Die Konjunkturerwartungen notierten trotz leichter Verbesserungen ebenfalls weiter im negativen Bereich und signalisieren weiterhin überwiegend pessimistische Konjunkturausblicke. Die unternehmerische Unsicherheit blieb auch im Oktober überdurchschnittlich hoch.

Weak Industrial Economy Determines Economic Picture. Results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (Business Cycle Survey) of October 2023
The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) of October show a sideways movement in overall economic assessments. The WIFO Business Climate Index, at –7.9 points (seasonally adjusted), was 0.5 points above the value of the previous month (–8.4 points). The pessimistic economic picture is determined in particular by the continued weakness of the industrial economy. Assessments of the situation in manufacturing deteriorated further, while they remained almost unchanged for the economy as a whole. Despite slight improvements, economic expectations also remained in negative territory and continue to signal a pessimistic economic outlook. Business uncertainty remained above average in October.
