Michael Klien is Senior Economist at WIFO and has been working in the Research Groups "Macroeconomics and European Economic
Policy" and "Structural Change and Regional Development" since 2014. He completed his Master's and doctorate studies at the
Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and then worked as a post-doc at the IAE de Paris, Sorbonne Graduate
Business School. His research focusses on the organisation of the public sector and the efficiency of public service delivery.
His research interests range from finance, political economics, organisational and institutional economics to industrial economics.
Several publications in international journals have emerged from these diverse research projects. Apart from academic experience,
he has extensive experience consulting national and international organisations (OECD, World Bank). In his function as a construction
and housing expert at WIFO, Michael Klien also deals intensively with questions of the construction economy, the affordability
of housing and is also the Austrian representative in the Euroconstruct network. Recently, public procurement has been a special
focus of his work. A wide variety of studies on the impact of European directives on procurement practice or the dissemination
of green public procurement underline the expertise in this area.
